HSS (High Speed Steel) twist drills are the standard general-purpose drill bits used in hand drills, pillar drills, and power tools for drilling metal, timber, plastics, and composite materials. At the DIY Hardware Store, our HSS jobber drills are available in the metric sizes most commonly used in engineering, metalwork, joinery, and general DIY across the UK.
The HSS designation refers to the tool steel alloy from which the bit is ground - a material that retains its cutting edge at the higher temperatures generated by metal drilling, unlike standard carbon steel bits which soften and dull rapidly. For drilling steel, aluminium, brass, and other metals, HSS is the minimum specification; for stainless steel and harder alloys, cobalt-enhanced HSS (HSS-Co) or carbide-tipped bits are a better choice.
Jobber drills (the standard HSS format) have a flute length approximately ten times the diameter, making them versatile for a wide range of hole depths. Available individually and in sets covering the most commonly used metric sizes at the DIY Hardware Store.
