Collection: Steel Rising Butt Hinges

A rising butt hinge lifts a door slightly as it opens, using a helical knuckle geometry that converts the rotational movement of opening into a small upward lift. At the DIY Hardware Store, our steel rising butt hinges are the practical solution for doors that need to clear fitted carpet, thick floor coverings, or slight floor level changes without trimming the door bottom or raising the threshold.

As the door swings open, the helical knuckle drives the hinge leaves apart vertically, raising the door by approximately 6-8mm over the first 90 degrees of opening. This lift clears the carpet pile beneath the door without the door binding, dragging, or requiring a threshold strip. The door drops back to the closed position under its own weight as it's pushed closed - the weight of the door provides the closing force that works against the helix.

Rising butt hinges are handed - left-hand and right-hand versions are mirror images of each other. The hand is determined by which side the hinges are on when the door opens towards you. Available in steel at the DIY Hardware Store in the standard 75mm and 100mm sizes for internal doors.
