Roofing Screws & Washers

Roofing screws with bonded EPDM rubber washers are the standard fastener for fixing corrugated metal roofing sheets, profiled cladding, and polycarbonate glazing panels to steel and timber purlins and rails. At the DIY Hardware Store, our roofing screws and washers cover the hex-head self-drilling types used in agricultural buildings, industrial units, garden rooms, and domestic garage and outbuilding roofing projects.

The EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber washer bonded to the underside of the hex head is the key component that makes roofing screws weatherproof: as the screw is driven, the washer compresses against the roofing sheet surface, sealing the fixing hole against water ingress. Over-driving compresses the washer excessively and causes it to extrude beyond the screw head, which can create a water path into the building rather than away from it - the correct torque leaves the washer slightly compressed but not extruded.
