Collection: Sashcord

Sashcord is the traditional waxed cotton or modern polypropylene rope used in double-hung timber sash windows to connect the sash weights to the window sash via pulleys in the pulley stile, counterbalancing the weight of the sash and allowing it to remain at any height without falling. At the DIY Hardware Store, our sashcord range covers the traditional and modern materials used for sash window repair and restoration work.

Sashcord failure is one of the most common problems in older properties with traditional sash windows - when the cord breaks, the counterweight drops into the hollow pulley stile void and the sash either cannot be opened or falls closed without support. Replacing the sashcord requires removing the staff bead and parting bead, extracting the sash, threading the new cord through the pulley and attaching it to the weight, then reassembling the window. It's a manageable DIY task with the correct cord and a clear understanding of the window's internal structure.

Available in natural waxed cotton (traditional) and polypropylene (modern, longer-lasting) at the DIY Hardware Store, in the diameters suited to standard UK sash window weights.
