Pulleys

A pulley redirects the line of a cord, rope, or wire - changing its direction and, in block-and-tackle configurations, providing a mechanical advantage that reduces the effort required to raise or move a load. A single fixed pulley changes the direction of a line without multiplying force - used in clothesline corner pulleys and curtain cord routing, where the purpose is to change the cord direction rather than gain mechanical advantage. A movable pulley or block-and-tackle system halves the effort required to raise a load with each additional sheave added to the system, at the cost of pulling twice the length of rope. For general domestic and workshop use, fixed pulleys in plastic and brass are the most commonly needed type.
