A well-fastened window closes and stays closed reliably, keeps out draughts, and provides a degree of security against casual opening from outside. The casement window fastener is the pivoting cam handle that draws a casement sash closed against the frame and holds it in position. Standard patterns include the cockspur handle, the wedge plate (peg) fastener, and the more modern espagnolette-type lever. For sash windows, sash fasteners (fitch catches and Brighton patterns) lock the meeting rail of upper and lower sashes together to prevent independent movement and reduce draughts at this vulnerable point in the window.
