Collection: Nightlatches

A nightlatch - the lock most people simply call a Yale lock - is the self-locking latch that allows a front door to close and lock automatically from outside while remaining openable from inside without a key. At the DIY Hardware Store, our nightlatches cover the standard rim-mounted and deadlocking versions used on residential front doors across the UK.

The standard nightlatch has a spring latch bolt that retracts when the external key is turned or the internal handle or snib is operated. When the door closes, the latch engages the strike automatically. The internal snib can be set to hold the latch back (for free exit without a key) or to double-lock the bolt in the engaged position. A deadlocking nightlatch adds a secondary deadbolt that can only be retracted with the key, preventing the latch from being slipped and providing an additional level of security.

Available in the standard 40mm and 60mm case sizes in silver, gold, and white finishes at the DIY Hardware Store. Note that nightlatches alone are not typically sufficient to meet insurance requirements for front door security - they should be used in combination with a BS 3621 mortice deadlock.
