The nut and washer are the two most fundamental complementary components in any bolted connection - the nut provides the threaded engagement that develops the clamping force, and the washer distributes that force across a bearing area large enough to prevent pull-through, embedment, or surface damage. Standard flat washers are the most commonly used type - a simple disc that sits under the nut (and often under the bolt head too) to spread the clamping load. Spring washers provide a degree of vibration resistance by maintaining tension in the joint as it settles. Shakeproof (serrated) washers bite into the mating surface to provide positive anti-rotation resistance. Nyloc nuts incorporate a nylon insert that grips the bolt thread and resists loosening under vibration - the correct specification for many mechanical and automotive applications.
