Drilling into brick, concrete, block, and stone requires a drill bit specifically designed for the purpose - the tungsten carbide tip and flute geometry of a masonry drill are entirely different from a twist drill, and using the wrong type will produce poor results and rapidly damage the bit. At the DIY Hardware Store, our masonry drills are available in the metric sizes most commonly needed for wall plug, frame fixing, throughbolt, and conduit installations in domestic and commercial buildings.
The tungsten carbide tip of a masonry drill is brazed or sintered to the steel shank and is significantly harder than the materials it's drilling into. When used with a hammer drill (which combines rotation with a percussive hammering action), it breaks down the masonry substrate progressively while the flute clears the dust from the hole. Standard SDS or round-shank versions are available depending on the drill chuck type being used.
Available at the DIY Hardware Store individually and in sets covering the most commonly used wall plug and fixing sizes - 5mm, 6mm, 7mm, 8mm, and 10mm are the most frequently needed for standard domestic fixing applications.
