A pronged tee nut - also known as a T-nut or barrel nut insert - is driven into a pre-drilled hole in timber or panel material from one face, with the pronged flange spreading into the material surface to prevent rotation and pull-through, leaving a flush threaded insert on the opposite face for bolt connections. At the DIY Hardware Store, our pronged tee nuts are available in metric sizes for the furniture assembly, woodworking jig, and flat-pack joinery applications where a recessed threaded insert is the correct fixing method.
Tee nuts are used wherever a bolt connection is needed through a timber or panel component but a through-bolt and nut isn't practical - typically in furniture assembly where one face of the panel must be flush, in jig and fixture making where a recessed bolt head is needed, and in flat-pack furniture systems where the bolt must be inserted from one side. The pronged flanges grip into the timber fibres as the bolt is tightened, preventing the nut from spinning while the bolt is torqued down.
