Collection: Spring Toggles

A spring toggle bolt is the hollow-wall fixing that provides maximum load capacity in plasterboard and hollow block walls by creating a large bearing surface against the blind (back) face of the board. At the DIY Hardware Store, our spring toggles cover the standard butterfly toggle bolt format used for heavy fixings in domestic plasterboard walls where no stud is accessible behind the fixing point.

A spring toggle consists of a machine screw and a pair of spring-loaded wings that fold flat to pass through the drilled hole and then spring open on the far side of the board. As the bolt is tightened, the wings pull up against the back face of the plasterboard, spreading the load across a much larger area than any conventional plug can achieve in this substrate. This is the highest-capacity hollow wall fixing available for plasterboard-only installations.

One important limitation: if the bolt is removed, the wings fall into the wall cavity and are lost - spring toggles are effectively single-use, and the bolt cannot be re-inserted into the same wings. Available in standard sizes at the DIY Hardware Store, sold as singles for matching to specific bolt diameters and board thicknesses.
