Masonry screws - most commonly known by the trade name Rawlscrew or Tapcon - are direct-fix screws that thread into pre-drilled masonry holes without a separate wall plug, cutting their own thread in the masonry as they're driven. At the DIY Hardware Store, our masonry screws cover the hex head and countersunk formats used for timber and metal frame fixing to masonry walls and concrete floors in domestic and construction applications.
The masonry screw system requires a specific drill diameter (typically 1mm smaller than the screw diameter) to create a hole that the screw thread can bite into without the hole being so tight that the screw cannot be driven to depth. A hammer drill is used to create the hole; a standard drill or impact driver drives the screw. The resulting fixing is stronger than a standard plastic plug in most masonry types and can be removed and replaced without destroying the fixing point, unlike an expansion anchor.
Available in hex washer head (for maximum driving torque) and countersunk (for flush surface finishing) in the sizes most commonly used for timber fixing to brick and concrete at the DIY Hardware Store.
