Collection: Wing Drill Screws

A wing drill screw - also known as a W-screw or wing-cutter self-drilling screw - is a self-drilling timber fastener with small wing cutters below the drill point that ream out the timber hole to a larger diameter than the screw thread, preventing the thread from engaging in the timber as the screw passes through the top piece. At the DIY Hardware Store, our wing drill screws are available for the timber-to-steel and timber-to-timber applications in flooring, decking, and structural assembly where this specialist drive characteristic is required.

The wings break off when the screw tip reaches the steel or hard substrate beneath, at which point the thread begins to engage - ensuring that the top timber piece is drawn firmly down to the substrate without being lifted or distorted by the thread grip in the upper material. This makes wing drill screws the specified fastener for fixing timber decking and flooring boards to steel joists and framing, where the thread must only engage the steel member and not the timber above it.

  • Wing cutters ream timber hole larger than thread diameter
  • Wings break off on contact with steel substrate below
  • Thread only engages steel member - pulls timber down firmly
  • Standard for timber decking fixed to steel joists
  • Recessed countersunk head for flush surface finish
  • Available in standard decking and flooring lengths
