Steel Strap Hinges

The steel strap hinge is the long, tapered surface-mounted hinge used on ledged and braced timber gates, shed doors, stable doors, and garden structures where the hinge's appearance is part of the visual character of the fitting and where the extended strap distributes the hanging load along the gate timber. The long strap arm extends across a significant portion of the gate face, transferring the weight of the gate into the timber ledge or rail rather than concentrating it at a single point as a butt hinge would. This load distribution makes strap hinges particularly well suited to wide, heavy ledged gates that would overstress a standard hinge at the bearing point. The traditional appearance - with forged or pressed steel in a tapered profile - is the defining visual element of a classic timber gate or barn door installation.
