The right brush makes a significant difference to the quality of a painted finish - and investing in a decent set of brushes, properly maintained, pays back across every decorating project they're used on. Brush quality is determined primarily by the bristle or filament quality and the setting that holds them in the ferrule. Synthetic filament brushes work exceptionally well with water-based (emulsion and acrylic) paints and are easy to clean; natural bristle brushes carry oil-based and solvent-borne coatings more effectively and provide a superior finish on woodwork and metalwork. A quality brush leaves no streaks, holds a good volume of paint, and cuts a clean edge without bristles splaying under load.
